I studied Psychology, Mathematics, and Statistics at the University of Berne. The years 1982 to 1984 I spent as a postdoc in the Statistics Departments of Purdue University and Stanford University. After a random walk around the world with appointments at Indiana University, the University of Berne, Standford University, and Victoria University of Wellington, I was appointed as Associate Professor of Statistics in the Mathematics Department of Indiana University in 1987, and became full professor in 1995. In january 1999 I took my current position of Professor of Applied Statistics at the University of Neuchatel.
My main research interests are in the area of multivariate statistics, in which I have numerous publications. My recent book "A first Course in Multivariate Statistics" gives a good idea of my philosophy of unity of theoretical, practical, and computational aspects of this area. My older book "Common Principal Components and Relaed Multivariate Models" is unfortunately out of print.
I am member of several professional organizations and a fellow of the American Statistical Association. My professional life has been characterized by intensive collaboration with PhD students and friends. My hobbies include biking, climbing vertical walls in the Dolomites, and frequent visits to Italy. My Erdös number is 4.
